Journey from Kukës to Elbasan: A Day of Adventure and Weather Challenges


Today, we embarked on a new leg of our Albanian journey, leaving Kukës around 10:00 AM. The morning greeted us with a mix of rain and strong winds, ranging from light drizzles to heavier downpours. Despite the weather, we decided to head towards Peshkopi, taking the scenic back roads past the local airport.


Along the way, we made a pleasant stop for coffee, enjoying a brief respite from the rain. Once in Peshkopi, we treated ourselves to some delicious byrek and coffee, savouring the moment as the weather improved.


Continuing our journey, we ventured onto the new road that leads to the city of Elbasan. About 15 minutes away from our destination, the heavens opened up once again, and we found ourselves driving through a heavy downpour.


Arriving at Hotel Colombo near Fish city thoroughly soaked but in good spirits. Our room, 101, a cosy space with one double bed and two singles, provided the perfect shelter. As the rain continued, Dave and m quickly fell asleep

Day One – Misfires, Flights, and Tirana Our first day began with a slight misfire. I was up early, packed, and almost ready to walk out the door when I decided the van deserved a quick clean before the journey. A “light spring clean” escalated into washing the roof, which meant ladders, pressure washers, and assorted accoutrements. I became so engrossed that I completely lost track of time. Dave arrived bang on time to find me halfway up a ladder, pressure washer in hand, and nowhere near ready to leave. A hasty tidy-up followed, and we eventually set off only a few minutes late. I had booked a 20kg checked bag, a 10kg carry-on, plus the allowed small personal bag.
